While I agree that weight training does not generally burn a whole lot of calories in any given session (unless the workout is ridiculous), consistently weight training does have the positive effect of increasing lean muscle mass which leads to an increased basal metabolic rate because muscle mass requires more calories to simply exist than does fat.

I agree that diet plays a more important role in weight loss (which should be called fat loss), but I think the three things you identify, diet, cardio and weights, are three legs of a stool that support fat loss.

There is a Canadian Physician who has a great blog at http://bmimedical.blogspot.com. He would agree.Colin Madlandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09096567704713672660noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2062044641165131850.post-69468692532625212302008-09-09T01:59:00.000-06:002008-09-09T01:59:00.000-06:00thanks for answering my question. I figure having more muscle will help me feel better and when it is balanced with a good diet and aerobic 3 times a week, I should be on my way to feeling like my old sexy self again. (now don't go post something about how mental image has nothing to do with physical fitness).Emily A.https://www.blogger.com/profile/17643608048915245152noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2062044641165131850.post-14223389127075341502008-09-08T14:37:00.000-06:002008-09-08T14:37:00.000-06:00any recommendations for a pregnant woman who is to...any recommendations for a pregnant woman who is too tired do anything aerobic? just wondering . . .Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2062044641165131850.post-41597560692393820532008-09-08T09:56:00.000-06:002008-09-08T09:56:00.000-06:00while i agree that you won't lose weight directly ...while i agree that you won't lose weight directly by weightlifting (i'm thinking like high weight/low reps) you can get one heck of a aerobic workout lifting light weights a lot. plus, anything that gets your metabolism up should help you lose weight right?

Not to mention that running, while making you thin, won't make you look good. you build the tone and muscle definition from lifting weights.

And dieting? Ugghhh...don't they make a pill for that or something? :)The Woulfeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16590809512822983409noreply@blogger.com
